Should bittersweet remain?

Recommended Posts

This vine is coming up in one of my landscape beds and is pretty aggressive in growth.  It is my new home, so I'm not sure what plantings were done in the past.  It doesn't look like a weed to me, but it is really taking over.

You told me it might be bittersweet based on the leaf and the way it twines, and I did pull one up to look at the root and it was indeed orange so that must be it. Now I'm trying to decide if I pull it or train it.  I may try to train one area of it at the corner of the house, but I've pulled up the rest. - K.E. -

We deal with bittersweet (Celastrus scandens) as visiting gardeners -- that is, in others' gardens, not in our own. Would those who have it in their own gardens like to comment, to give K.E. the benefit of your experience?

We never planted Bittersweet in our yard, but none the less we ended up with some.  We decided to leave it because I love cutting the berry branches for fall decorations.  What a mistake!!.  It reseeded everywhere and we still have not been able to get rid of it.  Is is very invasive and hard to dig up.
