Michele A 2 Report post Posted April 26, 2014 I am wondering if this kind of branching is normal for a Katsura tree that was planted 3 or 4 yrs ago? Am I supposed to be trimming out some of the branches? I don't know why the picture is so big up there?
Steven Nikkila 32 Report post Posted April 26, 2014 Since this was planted 3 to 4 years ago, it is not unusual to have tip die back and to be twiggy on the inside. Yes, prune out some of the weak inner branching to allow more sun and more air circulation.
msumary 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2014 It appears the tree was approximately 3 inch caliper tree when planted. It is still going through transplant shock. This is NOT unusual several years after it was planted. One result of transplant shock is tip die back. Pruning out dead and dense extra branches helps shape and ensures continued health. Janet Macunovich 32 Report post Posted April 26, 2014 We try to plant small, because there's always less transplant loss. Even the small 2 gallon Katsura's I planted last fall have a little tip die back this year, but otherwise they're healthy. With a little intelligent pruning (dead, crossing, weak, etc branches, your tree should be fine.
