Your Letters 2 Report post Posted August 24, 2013 This plant was given to us years ago by an older woman from Appalachia who said it was called "strew" because they would strew it about the dwelling and pluck it to use as a bug repellant. We cannot figure out what it is - it doesn't seem to match any fern identification we can determine, we haven't ever seen spores develop on it, and yet it has never flowered, either. The leaves are aromatic, and when we put it behind our ears it does seem to repel bugs! Would you happen to have an idea of what it is?Thank-you,D. & J.
Margaret Thele 16 Report post Posted August 26, 2013 Do you have a picture of the plant? That would help. Traditionally mints, tansy and galium or lady's bedstarw have been used as 'strewing' herbs but they are very different, if vigorous, plants.
Beaufort 1 Report post Posted September 10, 2013 Aromatic. What does it smell like? Fuzzy leaves? Mint family? Flowers?
