Dsmith74 16 Report post Posted April 18, 2013 Flowering (and especially making seeds and fruits) takes a lot of energy, which without the flower would just be use by the plant to grow healthier and larger (with more stalks, which is what you want) next year. That's why we always cut them off as soon as we see them. Same reason I usually debud many first-year perennials, vines, and shrubs if they try to flower. On the other hand, Mom inherited a small, very well-established patch that provides more than she could ever use when they moved to their current house.
