jeshrake 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2012 Does anyone have any suggestions for organically removing wild violets from a lawn? There are too many to dig by hand. We don't want to use chemicals. Thanks,J
Janet Macunovich 32 Report post Posted June 11, 2012 Smother the area where they are, keep it smothered through to late fall and then put down sod. Sod, not seed so the replacement lawn acts as a continuation of the smother -- otherwise, as that spot's loaded with violet seed already, if you bare it that violet seed will sprout as readily as grass seed. Or MORE readily. This is a shady or part shady area, right? That's violet's domain. Lawn grass is at a disadvantage there. Switching to a shade-loving, thick groundcover may be a better plan. If there are places where you can dig the violets, be sure to dig again in FALL. In fall, violets make blind (non-opening) flowers that produce a second crop of seed. If you weed them out in spring and don't keep an eye on that space or fill it immediately with sod, new violets get going that bloom and seed that fall. By the next spring you're back where you started.
