tlmkozak 2 Report post Posted May 17, 2012 I have two young tree peonies. Both fared well through the winter and are planted in different locations. This spring the larger one had 6 buds and the smaller one had two. Suddenly the larger one doesn't look right. The buds quit growing and things look kind of wilty. The smaller one looks great and the buds are large and getting ready to bloom. So what's wrong with the larger tree peony and how do I treat it? Thanks! Janet Macunovich 32 Report post Posted May 31, 2012 Sorry to have missed this. Did it die back, the large one? When we see growth begin and then stop we usually suspect a problem with roots. Which may be with the roots themselves or the connection between roots and twigs. Girdling at the trunk, rotted or broken roots. Takes poking around to see if there are any clues... tlmkozak 2 Report post Posted July 2, 2012 The plant itself is fine just the buds shriveled up.
Margaret Thele 16 Report post Posted July 4, 2012 Glad the tree survived. Botrytis is a fungus disease that causes the buds to blast.Might have been the issue. Clean up and destroy any funky foliage or buds, might help in future seasons.
