Shady mossy places needs plant ideas

Recommended Posts

(Anyone can jump in here; I'm still working to transfer email to the Forum so I can have your help. Or at least have anything we come up with in such exchanges available to others who might benefit by it.) - Janet -

I've got a full-shade location (pine & spruce), and two moss-covered chimney blocks that are the supports for the bottom step of the new screen-house I'm building (not under the eaves). I'm looking for something woody to plant in the blocks (they're open at the bottom). Sandy loam soil, wet in spring. I have all the Rhododendrons and Azaleas I want; need it to be a shrub rather than a perennial because otherwise the dogs will call it a bed.

So far all I've found that are interesting at all are:

Variegated pagoda dogwood (Cornus alternifolia 'Gold Bullion') (perhaps too big?)

Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) (too late to leaf out?)

- L.C. -

Not sure I follow the situation, L.C. Sounds intriguing, and maybe a place that calls for things other than plants. Or for good old steady eddy things rather than something unusual and not so predictable.

But -- pagoda dogwood and summersweet are big plants, tree and shrub. Yet you'd be planting them IN chimney blocks? Since we're here on the Forum, transferred from where you first contacted me by email, can you place a photo or drawing for us? Or add further description?
