Janet Macunovich 32 Report post Posted March 21, 2012 We cut it like grape vine, back to main canes -- whichever ones we elected to fan out to fill out the space. Dead wood comes out. Takes a close look but it is very dry and no buds swelling. We cut side branches back to short stubs. That way it blooms well and has nice foliage. Most intensely colored foliage on the variegated one seems to be from the older wood, and flower buds come from those stubs/branch bases, too. So we can also cut out overgrowth during the growing season -- within limits; it needs leaf to grow and be healthy.
